Today, Will Swannell, Co-Founder and CEO of venue website, Hire Space, shares with us his experience of co-founding a fast growth business, including the challenges of building a high calibre team and the importance of taking the time to step back and see the bigger picture.
1. What is the mission of your business and how do you hope it will change the world?
Our mission is to create a thriving marketplace for venues, and help people organise the most memorable occasions in the world’s most desirable spaces.
Events are an important part of everyone’s life, both for work and for play, but organising them can be a chore and many unusual venues remain hidden.
At Hire Space we want to make finding venues and organising events quick and enjoyable, and to make sure that the world’s best venues are at everyone’s fingertips. We want to do this in each of the major cities of the world.
2. What’s your biggest challenge in growing your business?
I’m incredibly proud of what the team have achieved over the past five years, but the hardest thing to do is finding talented people to continue to grow the team who are the same high calibre as the team today.
Hiring can be competitive with so many incredible fast growing companies in London, especially the others featured in the Leap 100. Standing out against the crowd can be tough and it’s something that challenges us as we try to keep up with our rapid growth.
3. What advice would you give to your former self when you were starting/joining the business?
I would tell myself to take more time out to reflect when growing the business. It can be difficult in the early days to find the headspace to see the wood for the trees, especially as you have to play so many roles.
I’d advise myself to take a week out periodically to look at the bigger picture. A week away from the grindstone in the first couple of years would likely have meant better decisions then, and a better company now.
Having said that, I know my former self wouldn’t take that advice.
4. What part of the job do you most love?
The part of the job I love the most is the constant learning. As the company grows quickly, so does your role as a founder and each day you’re learning different things and using different skills.
There is hardly a job at Hire Space that I haven’t had to play at some point on our journey and understanding how all these roles combine to create Hire Space is what I love most about coming to work every day.
