Doug Monro, Co-Founder of Adzuna, talks about the challenges in growing its recruitment search engine, providing smarter search options and powerful data about the job market to give jobseekers the information they need to take control of their careers.
1. What is the mission of your business and how do you hope it will change the world?
I’m Doug Monro, and together with Andrew Hunter, my co-founder, I run Adzuna, the world’s fastest growing job search engine. The company we created together, Adzuna, is a search engine for job ads used by over 10 million visitors per month that aims to list every job, everywhere. We search thousands of websites so our users don’t have to, bringing together millions of ads in one place. By providing smarter search options and powerful data about the job market, we give jobseekers the information they need to take control of their careers.
Adzuna’s data also powers the Number 10 Dashboard, used by the Prime Minister and senior officials to keep track of economic growth on a daily basis. What better way to help improve the world than bring real-time data to help influence decisions at the very top of government? When the company was dreamt up on the back of a post-it note in a London pub back in 2011, our mission was to help match people to better, more fulfilling jobs and keep Britain working.
Adzuna was our plan for making the world a better place.
Fast forward to the present day, and that remains at the heart of our business model. These days. Adzuna has expanded to attract 10m users a month, employ 50 superstars and serve up smart job search solutions in 16 countries around the world. To top all that off, we’ve just launched the new and improved version of our significantly enhanced ValueMyCV tool, that:
- Tells you what your CV is worth, so you know what salary you deserve
- Gets your CV battle-ready to land you that interview
- Inspires you with new career recommendations from over 1 million live job ads
That’s something we feel justified in being pretty proud of.
2. What’s been your biggest challenge in growing your business?
The rapid and innovative development of the Adzuna business has been a fantastic ride to date, and there have certainly been a few challenges and opportunities to learn along the road.
Neither Andrew or myself are techsperts, so the act of actually turning our vision into a comprehensive website that our users could make the most of was a million times harder than we imagined, Without our amazing CTO, we might still be scratching our heads and looking confused in Andrew’s spare room!
We also found expanding our business to international markets an amazing and enriching challenge – again, not as easy as you’d be tempted to think! Thanks to an amazing team of market experts based in our London office, though, we are now live in no less than 16 global marketplaces!
It’s been a brilliant journey so far, and we can’t wait to see what the next step will hold!
3. What advice would you give to your former self when you were starting your business?
Buckle up. The entrepreneurial lifestyle is stressful and overwhelming and not for everyone – it’s not the glamorous lifestyle choice that some make out. You need to be prepared for a tough journey, find a way to stay sane and make sure you don’t get distracted from the big picture.
Oh, and make your top priority to find an awesome tech and product expert that you trust to help turn your vision into a reality. They aren’t easy to find – but it will be the best investment of time and money you will ever make if you get it right.
4. What part of your job do you most love?
All of it. I’m surrounded by a shockingly smart, vibrant group of experts, who I could not be prouder of, working in an industry I love, driving exciting changes that will ultimately disrupt the way we search for and secure new jobs. What’s not to like?
